Wisp Resort & Mountain Park
Wisp Resort isn’t just a winter destination. The Mountain Park operates year-round with activities that work for groups, families, and anyone looking to try something new.

Skiing & Snowboarding
Wisp is the only ski resort in Maryland, with 32 slopes and trails spread across 172 acres. The terrain ranges from beginner-friendly greens to advanced black diamonds, with a vertical drop of 610 feet. Night skiing is available on select runs, and the resort offers ski and snowboard lessons for all ages. The season typically runs from December through March, depending on snow conditions and snowmaking operations.

Mountain Coaster
The mountain coaster runs downhill through the trees at speeds you control using a hand brake. The track stretches over 3,500 feet and includes banked turns, dips, and straightaways with views of the surrounding mountains. It’s open most of the year, weather permitting, and doesn’t require skiing experience or physical fitness beyond being able to sit and operate the brake.

Whitewater Rafting
Guided rafting trips run on the Upper Youghiogheny River from late spring into fall, typically May through September depending on water levels. Trips range from moderate Class III rapids to more advanced Class IV sections, with experienced guides leading each raft. Half-day and full-day trips are available. All equipment is provided, but you’ll want to bring water shoes and clothing that can get wet.

Ziplining & Aerial Adventure Course
Wisp’s canopy tours and aerial adventure courses take you through the treetops with ziplines, rope bridges, suspended obstacles, and platforms. The zipline canopy tour includes multiple lines with views over the valley and lake. The aerial park offers different difficulty levels—from beginner routes close to the ground to more challenging high-ropes courses—so groups with mixed experience levels can participate together. Tours are guided and include all safety equipment.

Mountain Biking
Wisp’s trail system stays open in the warmer months for mountain biking and hiking. The resort offers bike rentals and lift-assisted downhill access, so you can ride or hike down without climbing back up. Trail difficulty ranges from smooth, flowing beginner paths to technical downhill routes with rocks, roots, and steep grades.
Deep Creek Lake Golf
Deep Creek Lake is a great home base for golf trips, with scenic mountain courses near Wisp Resort, Oakland, and Waterfront Greens. From relaxed par-3 rounds to full 18-hole layouts with lake and mountain views, there are options for casual players, group outings, and weekend golf getaways.

Water Adventures
Deep Creek Lake is Maryland’s largest freshwater lake, and in the warmer months, it’s the center of the action.

Boating & Jet Skiing
The lake is open to powerboats, pontoons, and jet skis from late spring through early fall. You’ll find public boat launches and seasonal rentals around the lake. Many vacation rentals offer lake access or private dock slips, making it easy to get out on the water without hauling your own gear.

Kayaking & Paddleboarding
For a quieter morning, kayaks and paddleboards work well in the lake’s coves and calmer areas. Rentals are available locally, and some properties include kayaks or paddleboards for guest use.

Fishing
Deep Creek Lake is stocked with bass, trout, walleye, and perch. You can fish year-round with a Maryland fishing license. Early mornings and evenings tend to be the most productive, especially in the quieter arms of the lake.
Deep Creek Lake
State Park
Deep Creek Lake State Park covers over 700 acres on the lake’s eastern shore. It’s one of the most accessible spots for hiking, swimming, and exploring the area’s natural side without needing to venture far.

Public Beach & Swimming Area
The park maintains a public beach with lifeguards during summer months, typically from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The sandy beach stretches along a protected cove with gradual entry into the water, making it a good option for younger swimmers. Facilities include restrooms, changing areas, picnic pavilions, and a snack bar that operates during peak season. It’s a reliable spot if your rental doesn’t have direct lake access, or if you want a designated swim area with lifeguards and amenities nearby. Parking fills up quickly on weekends, so plan to arrive early at times.

Discovery Center
The park’s Discovery Center offers nature exhibits, educational programs, and seasonal events focused on local ecology and wildlife. Inside, you’ll find displays on the lake’s formation, native species, and the surrounding forest ecosystem. Rangers lead guided walks and nature programs throughout the summer, and the center hosts kids’ activities during school breaks. It’s a good rainy-day backup or a quick stop for families with younger kids who want to learn more about what they’re seeing on the trails. The center is open year-round, though hours vary by season.
Deep Creek Hiking
Deep Creek Lake State Park has many hiking trails, but is surrounded by several other state parks, each with its own character and trail system.

Beckman’s Trail
Beckman’s Trail is a 2-mile loop that climbs through wooded hillsides with occasional views of the lake below. The trail gains some elevation but remains manageable for most hikers. In fall, the canopy puts on a strong color show. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Indian Turnip Trail
Indian Turnip Trail is a shorter, easier walk—just under a mile—that moves through forest and wetland areas. It’s a good choice for families with younger kids or anyone looking for a quick stretch without committing to a longer hike. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Meadow Mountain Trail
Meadow Mountain Trail is a 5.5-mile route that follows a former roadbed through quiet mountain woods. In summer, hikers can expect wildflowers, birdsong, and a steady forest setting, while winter opens the trail for snowshoeing, skiing, and snowmobiling.

Swallow Falls State Park
About 15 minutes north of Deep Creek Lake, Swallow Falls is home to Maryland’s highest free-falling waterfall. The Muddy Creek Falls trail is short, mostly flat, and leads to a 53-foot cascade. The canyon trail loop takes you along the Youghiogheny River through old-growth hemlock forest.

Herrington Manor
Herrington Manor State Park is a smaller, quieter park with a 53-acre lake, beach area, and wooded trails. It’s less crowded than Deep Creek Lake State Park and offers a more secluded feel. Good for an easy afternoon hike or picnic.

Sang Run State Park
Located along the Casselman River, Sang Run is popular with anglers and paddlers. The setting is more remote and less developed, which makes it appealing if you’re looking to avoid crowds.
More Deep Creek Activities
Looking for something beyond the lake, trails, and golf course? Deep Creek also offers horseback riding, disc golf, scenic drives, local parks, and easy land-based activities that help round out a longer stay.
These options are great for slower mornings, mid-week plans, or groups looking for a little variety between bigger outdoor adventures.
