Golfing at Deep Creek Lake: A Guide to the Courses Worth Playing
Deep Creek Lake sits in the Appalachian highlands of western Maryland, and the golf here reflects the terrain — elevation changes, wooded corridors, lake views, and mountain air that makes an early tee time feel like a genuinely good idea.
The area has several courses ranging from a Hale Irwin-designed championship layout at Wisp Resort to a low-key par-3 course tucked inside a lakeside community. Whether your group is planning a dedicated golf weekend or mixing a round or two into a broader lake trip, here’s what you need to know before you book.

The Golf Courses Near Deep Creek Lake

Lodestone Golf Course at Wisp Resort
Lodestone is the standout championship course in the area — a par-72 layout that plays 7,507 yards from the back tees and sits at over 2,900 feet in elevation. This makes it the highest-elevation course in Maryland. Designed by three-time US Open champion Hale Irwin, the course features bentgrass greens, tees, and fairways, along with bold tree-lined fairways, eye-catching bunker complexes, and dramatic rock outcroppings.
Notable holes include the downhill par-5 13th — which drops 110 feet from tee to green — and the par-3 17th, where the tee shot carries over a large gulley to a sloped green guarded by a rock cliff. Multiple tee options make it playable for a range of skill levels, but this is a course that rewards accuracy and course management
Lodestone is located at the southern end of the lake within the Wisp Resort complex. Tee times can be booked directly through Wisp Resort.

Fantasy Valley Golf Course at Wisp Resort
Fantasy Valley plays a different character from Lodestone. The 6,446-yard, par-70 championship course flows through the natural contours at the base of the Wisp ski slopes. Beautiful mountain views, tree-lined fairways, and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. The course was previously known as Wisp Resort Golf Course and was ranked among the “100 Must-Play Courses of the Mid-Atlantic.
Multiple tee boxes keep it accessible for mixed-ability groups, making it the more approachable of the two Wisp courses. Both Lodestone and Fantasy Valley can be booked together if your group wants to play 36 holes during your stay.

Oakland Golf Club
Oakland Golf Club sits just minutes from Deep Creek Lake. It offers 18 holes of championship golf across 6,417 yards of rolling terrain. The course opened in 1937 and was designed by Ron Forse and Ed Ault, featuring bentgrass greens and bluegrass fairways.
Oakland is home to the annual Western Maryland Amateur Championship Tournament and is open to the public. It features a fully stocked pro shop and the Sand Trap Patio Bar & Restaurant on site. It’s a solid option if you want a classic, unpretentious round with good scenery and a friendly pace of play.

Thousand Acres Golf Club
Thousand Acres is located on the southern end of Deep Creek Lake. It was ranked the No. 1 semi-private golf course in Maryland by The Grint 2025 Golf Rankings. The course was designed by Craig Schreiner and Bob Holcomb to work with the natural terrain — bunkers, sight lines, water features, and tee complexes all shaped around the land.
The course winds through wooded Appalachian terrain with lake views on several holes. Call ahead to confirm current hole availability before your trip.

Waterfront Greens Community Golf Course
This one is a little different. Waterfront Greens is a private lakeside community in Swanton, MD. Among its amenities is a 9-hole par-3 golf course available exclusively to community guests. There’s also a miniature golf course, tennis courts, lake access, and a catch-and-release fishing pond.
Access is for guests staying in Waterfront Greens properties only. If you’re booking one of our homes in the community, the course is part of your stay. It’s an easy option for a casual morning round before heading to the lake.

Planning a Golf Weekend at Deep Creek Lake

When to Go
Peak golf season runs from spring through fall. Summer conditions are comfortable — the mountain elevation keeps temperatures in the upper 70s even in July. It’s noticeably cooler than courses closer to the coast.
Fall is worth planning around. The foliage along the wooded fairways at Lodestone and Oakland is striking. Aim for mid-September through mid-October.
Spring golf is possible, but mornings can be cold and frost isn’t unusual in April. Courses typically open as conditions allow. Confirm tee times directly before booking early-season trips.

What to Expect on the Course
Elevation changes are the defining factor here. At Lodestone, club selection shifts meaningfully across the round — the 110-foot drop on the 13th plays very differently from what the card suggests.
A rangefinder is worth bringing to courses you haven’t played before. Wooded terrain makes distance reads tricky, and some Fantasy Valley holes have water hazards with longer carries than they initially appear.
Most courses offer multiple tee options. Mixed-ability groups can usually find a setup that works without splitting up.

Group Golf Trips
Deep Creek Lake is a good fit for golf-focused group trips. A large rental home combined with tee times spread over a few days works well for groups of 8 to 20. Wisp Resort also offers organized group packages, including tournament services and catering for larger outings.
If golf is the main event, book tee times at Lodestone as soon as your rental is confirmed. Summer weekends fill quickly.

Practical Tips for Golf at Deep Creek Lake

Book tee times early. Lodestone weekends in summer fill fast. Book at the same time you reserve your rental.
Bring layers for morning rounds. Even in July, early mornings on the mountain run cool. A light layer is worth having.
Pack a rangefinder. Elevation changes and wooded sightlines make distance estimation on these courses harder than flat terrain.
Check course conditions in early spring. Deep Creek receives significant snowfall at elevation. Most courses open by late April or May — confirm before planning early-season rounds.
Build in off-course time. The lake, restaurants, and Wisp Resort activities are all close. A two-day golf trip works well with one full day on the course and one day on the water.
AWD or 4WD is recommended in winter. If your fall trip extends into late October or November, be aware of mountain road conditions.
