Things to Do at Deep Creek Lake, Maryland — A Seasonal Guide
Deep Creek Lake is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most versatile destinations. It sits in the mountains of western Maryland, roughly three hours from both Washington D.C. and Baltimore, and it looks completely different depending on when you visit. Summer means boats and lake days. Fall brings some of the best foliage in the region. Winter centers on Wisp Resort. Spring offers trout streams, open trails, and a quieter version of everything else.
This guide covers what to actually do — and expect — across all four seasons, so you can match your trip to the right time of year.

Summer at Deep Creek Lake
Late May through Labor Day

Summer is peak season, and for good reason. At 3,900 acres, Deep Creek Lake offers a full range of water recreation. Most visitors spend their days on or near the water, and there’s enough here to fill a week without repeating yourself. Visitdeepcreek
On the Water
Boating is the anchor activity. Pontoon boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and jet skis are all available for rental at marinas around the lake. If you want something more adventurous, the rapids of the Youghiogheny River offer whitewater rafting opportunities just a short drive away through Adventure Sports Center International. At Wisp Resort
Wisp doesn’t shut down when the snow melts. In summer it’s a good destination for hiking, mountain biking, golf, aerial challenge courses, ziplines, and a mountain coaster. The mountain coaster is a particular hit with families and runs year-round.
Local Events

The July 4th Fire on the Mountain Fireworks Display lights up the sky above Marsh Mountain, with prime viewing locations at Wisp Resort, downtown McHenry, and Deep Creek Lake. The Deep Creek Lake Farmers Market runs every Friday from 3–7 PM during summer, with fresh produce, baked goods, and handcrafted items from local vendors, often with live music.
Fall at Deep Creek Lake
Mid-September through late October

Fall may be the most underrated time to visit. The crowds thin after Labor Day, temperatures drop to comfortable hiking weather, and the forested ridges around the lake turn. The terrain here is part of the Appalachian Mountains, so the seasons feel dramatic — fall colors are spectacular.
Foliage and Hiking

Swallow Falls State Park and the chairlift at Wisp Resort take on new meaning in fall when the colorful hues of the season take center stage. Swallow Falls is also home to Muddy Creek Falls, Maryland’s tallest free-falling waterfall.
Herrington Manor State Park is one of the more peaceful options in the area — it centers around a small lake surrounded by forest and tends to feel quieter and less crowded than Deep Creek Lake State Park. New Germany State Park is another overlooked option with lake reflections worth seeing during peak foliage.

Winter at Deep Creek Lake
December through March

Winter brings a different energy to Deep Creek. Wisp Resort is Maryland’s only ski area, and it anchors the season. But there’s enough beyond the slopes to fill a full trip even for non-skiers.
Skiing and Snowboarding at Wisp Resort

Wisp Resort offers 35-plus trails, seven lifts, a terrain park, and a beginner area with a magic carpet. Most slopes are groomed nightly, and night skiing is available — typically at lower rates with less crowd pressure.
Lessons are available for all skill levels and ages five and above, including a full-day option for children ages five through twelve. If you’re visiting over a holiday weekend, buy lift tickets in advance — Wisp sells out.

Beyond the Slopes
Muddy Creek Falls at Swallow Falls State Park typically freezes solid in winter, creating one of the more striking scenes in western Maryland. Deep Creek Lake State Park and Herrington Manor State Park are both worthwhile winter hikes.
Ice fishing is a real activity here, with local guides offering full experiences for those who want to try it. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are available in the surrounding state forests.
For indoor time, homes with private pools, hot tubs, game rooms, and theater setups are built for deep winter stays — and many of Deep Creek’s larger rentals are designed exactly for that.

Spring at Deep Creek Lake
April through early June

Spring is the quietest season, which is part of its appeal. Trails are open before the summer crowds arrive, trout season gets underway, and the landscape starts to open up after winter.
Fishing and Outdoor Pursuits

Trophy trout and bass are available through guided fly fishing, with outfitters providing all equipment for full-day experiences on the area’s Appalachian mountain rivers. Deep Creek Lake State Park has a public boat launch for early-season fishing.
Hiking opens up significantly in spring — Swallow Falls State Park, Potomac-Garrett State Forest, Savage River State Forest, and the surrounding state parks all offer trails that range from easy walks to more challenging terrain.
